DataPathways: Empowerment Begins

In late October 2024, the DfE launched its Data Capacity projects with a bold aim: to reduce the time and resources schools spend on low-value data admin and usher in a new era of informed decision-making. Tasked with exploring, developing, and sharing best practices for professional development and career pathways in data roles, our project was born out of the DfE’s call to action.

We are a grouping of eighth trusts brought together by a common aspiration to change the education data landscape. Our partnership is rooted in the belief that the profession should be dynamic, resourced, and attractive to both current professionals, and those considering a career change. As proponents for change, we seek to spark conversations, inspire action, and drive innovation across the sector.

Our partner trusts were carefully chosen to ensure diversity across geographic, demographic, and contexts. We aimed to promote inclusivity, and foster collaboration in our pursuit of meaningful change. Through three distinct workstreams—Data Strategy & Maturity Framework, A Career In Education Data, and Professional Development Landscape—we have delved into the complexities of data capability, career progression, and skill development.

The resources we present, including case studies outlining real-world data projects, serve as conversation starters. They showcase the range and depth of possibilities within the education data realm, from large-scale system overhauls to small-scale initiatives that drive progress. Our ultimate goal is to stimulate dialogue, foster debate, and ignite a movement towards transformative change.
